Your Guide to Preparing for a Relaxing Massage

Getting ready for a massage can be simple but knowing a few key tips can help you make the most of your session. Whether it’s your first massage or your hundredth, taking a little time to prepare beforehand can make a world of difference. At Altha, we want every visit to be as calming and rejuvenating as possible, so we’ve put together this simple guide to help you get the most out of your massage. We’re here to ensure your experience is as relaxing, safe, and restorative as possible.

Why a Massage Is More Than Relaxation

At Altha, we believe massages go beyond physical relief—they’re an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, let go of stress, and feel completely cared for in a safe and nurturing space. Whether you’re here to ease tension or simply enjoy a moment of calm, we’re here to support you.

First-Timer? Here’s Why You’ll Love It

If you’re new to massages, it’s natural to feel a little unsure of what to expect. Rest assured, our experienced therapists will guide you through the process and tailor your treatment to your comfort level. Think of it as your time to completely unwind, let go of tension, and focus on your well-being.

Before Your Massage: Preparation Tips

Avoid Moisturiser Before Your Appointment

Applying lotion or moisturiser before your massage can create a barrier between your skin and the oils used during the treatment. To get the full benefits of the massage and ensure smooth application of our therapeutic oils, it’s best to skip your usual body cream that day.

Be Mindful of Tanning Products

If you’ve applied a self-tanner recently, please note that massage oils may cause it to break down or streak. For best results, avoid using tanning products at least 24 hours before your massage.

Come Makeup-Free

If your massage includes areas like your face, arriving without makeup allows our oils to fully penetrate your skin.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Choose loose, comfortable clothing that’s easy to change out of. Whilst most of the massage is performed with towels covering you, being comfortable before and after helps maintain a relaxing atmosphere.

Communicate Any Preferences

This is your safe space to unwind. Share any preferences or concerns with your therapist, whether it’s specific areas you’d like them to focus on (or avoid), pressure preferences, or sensitivities. Our priority is your comfort and well-being.

Avoid Heavy Meals:

A full stomach can make it difficult to fully relax on the massage table. Enjoy a light meal or snack about an hour or two before your appointment to avoid discomfort.

What to Expect During Your Massage

A Calm Environment

At Altha Spa, our massage rooms are designed to create a tranquil and soothing atmosphere, with soft lighting, relaxing music, and a cozy treatment bed.

Your Choice of Pressure

Whether you prefer a gentle, relaxing massage or a deeper, more therapeutic approach, our therapists will adjust their techniques to suit your needs.

Time to Relax:

Your therapist will guide you through the session ensuring you feel at ease every step of the way. This is your time, so feel free to chat, ask questions or simply enjoy the quiet— it’s entirely up to you. This is your time, to unwind and recharge. Whether you prefer a conversation or a peaceful, silent experience, there’s absolutely no pressure.

After Your Massage: Essential Aftercare

Hydrate Well

Drinking water after your massage is essential to flush out toxins released during the treatment.

Avoid Heat Treatments

Skip saunas, steam rooms, or hot baths for at least 24 hours after your massage to avoid overstimulating your body and causing discomfort.

Rest and Relax

Avoid strenuous activities immediately after your massage, your body has just been through a therapeutic session, so take it easy for the rest of the day to maximize the benefits and prolong the calming effects.

Moisturise Afterward

Now’s the perfect time to rehydrate your skin with a light moisturiser to lock in the benefits of the oils used during your treatment.
